Health Level Seven is one of several American National Standards Institute (ANSI) -accredited Standards Developing Organizations (SDOs) operating in the healthcare arena. HL7 V2.x supports clinical practice and the management, delivery, and evaluation of health services, and is the most commonly used in the world.
A Results-only HL7 interface only sends results from the Apex ALM to the EHR. With an Orders & Results HL7 interface the Apex ALM accepts lab requests from EHR and then sends results back to the EHR. It is always preferable to a have an Orders & Results HL7 interface if supported by your EHR.
Most EHR vendors charge a fee to add support for processing HL7 messages. Payment of this fee is the customer's responsibility. This fee compensates the EHR vendor for labor expended to setup test compendium and execute their end of validation test plan to confirm the Apex interface conforms to their interface specifications.
